Does all yoga include vinyasa???

I am trying to find a class that will help with overall strength... i absolutely fell in love with Anusara years ago but in CT there are only 3 certified Anusara instructors. Today I drove an hour to get to ones class and was surprised to find us starting with sun salutes-- i didnt thikn it was as integral in Anusara. I have an old fracture in my wrist and some tendonitis in my opposite shoulder, so not to be a wimp or anything but I kinda poop out on the 5 or 6th chaturanga dandasana. My chin actually kinda hit the floor during one -- I know I need to strenghten there obviously-- but i was wondering-- does ALL yoga move through the vinyasa and sun salutes??

    Hello Joy,

You should definitely tell your teacher before class about your wrist and shoulder. Most Anusara teachers have had substantial training in yoga therapeutics and should be able to suggest to you modifications or alternate poses for you to do...
For example, if the class does include chaturanga dandasana, you can make the pose less weight bearing by bring your knees down first.

Surya namaskars (sun salutations) are not "integral" to Anusara any more than any other vinyasa or sequence of poses. Most classes will begin though with some kind of warm up with movement linked to breath, but what the teacher chooses should depend on the level of students and the focus of the class.

On the All Yoga tribe I have written a number of times on wrist and shoulder issues. Try doing a search on "wrist" in the tribe search window.

    Blessings,
    Scott

If Anusara yoga is a western derivative of some version of "traditional" Hatha yoga, naturally there would be a sun salutation element to it IMO.

I would suggest something less pedestrian, though, I think that's more my preference than yours perhaps.

        Hello Joy.

Yogi said it first and best!

Humph! I never let my students get by with that.

So... consider modificatinos for your injuries.. dont do the salutations or maybe just not the chatarranga. Or hold back and flop to the floor. Whatever.. never never never hurt yourself in yoga.. its not worth it to look cool in a class just to be injuried and not able for days weeks later.

That said I am guilty of' sucking it up' and doing those horrible chatrangeughs.s. I actually hate them. Mine never are quite right.. adn I am ususally next to a person who does them perfectly levitating effortlessly while I am groaning and then she.. always a SHE.. slowly descends, body never touches the ground and she flows forward with nose skimming the ground adn into a beautiful snake. My nose is a foot from the floor and I exhale as loudly as possible to over ride the THUMP from my body hitting the floor when I once again fail at levitation from that position.

        Take good care my friend

LOL-- Yeh--- I used to better at them but lately I am not so good. I greatly appreciate your comments. Thank you so much. It is hard when the vinyasa is incorporated in so many classes I try to attend here. CT has vinyasa on the brain!!!! LOL

            Joy,

Perhaps try an Iyengar class. I've never attended one that warmed up with any Sun Salutations. It's a more mechanical form of Yoga that I gain a LOT from anatomically, which it sounds like you would appreciate as well.

Wow I must be spoiled living in SF/LA. There's a yoga studio on every block here! I can't imagine living somewhere where I only have three instructors to choose from in the whole state!!!

              Good luck to ya!
