I've had the best sleep for my spine on a single futon matress directly on the floor. If you look on craigslist you can often find people giving them away.

I have a quality thick futon mattress. My fiance thinks it's too hard so we've got a layer of memory foam on top to help him sleep better. But for me, the firm mattress is definitely the way to go.

There is a balance between firm support and comfy cushion that is healthy, but everyone finds comfort at different levels. You may want to try out different mattresses at hotels and see what type is best for you.

We've been on airmattresses for months (cheap crap made in China that leaks after 2 months and we have to keep returning them) because we didn't plan on staying where we are for more than 3 months.

Finally broke down (saved up) and bought a futon - the mattress is handmade in Missoula with wool and cotton. Pricey but I love it!

I son't know what a "KY yogi" is, so I'm not sure if I qualify to reply to your question.

My first trip to India, at the train stations, we'd sleep on a straw mat llike everybody else,...with maybe a sleep bag if it got cold. Yogis in the forest sleep on the forest floor. Sadhus sleep how they can.
Americans insist on their comforts. Many feel that conscious resting as opposed to deep slumber, is un-American. In the last 20 years, even the Army started to provide those isolation mats for bivouac....but I think there's still no law against sleeping au naturale... maybe even some yogic/meditational benefits.

Comfort kills? Luxurious furniture is the opposite of yoga?

I think it's true that a little 'discomfort' is good for a yogi.... and that many of our ancestors just slept on the ground, or in a tree.

There are also other traditions like chinese medicine that advise against sleeping on the floor, or bare earth too much so that you don't get damp conditions invading the body. I think much of this depends on your climate and your constitution - which changes from time to time.

I like the buddhas reccomendation of 'not too loose, not too tight'

When I first began yoga I had a lot of back work to do. Sleeping on the floor really helped me. I've slept on the floor now for over three years. I love the extra space it leaves in my bedroom. And now I actually get a back ache if I sleep in a bed.

When I'm out in the woods I'll sleep on the ground, otherwise I enjoy the comfort of a bed. my advice if your considering a mattress go for a latex one, they will last forever, and are non allergenic, plus they are comfortable without being to soft.

A word of warning...about five years ago we purchased an organic cotton and wool blend futon, and slept on the floor..after only a little more than one week, enough moisture has come up through the floorboards to cause a growth of mold all over the bottom of our lovely new bed...we cleaned, killed the mold, and my husband built a simple platform frame using recycled lumber...also, the futon was pricey, and is quite compacted now, not super comfy anymore...friends of mine have a natural rubber bed, and think it is the best thing ever, those are outrageously expensive, but probably an example of the old saying that you get what you pay for!
