I haven't practiced any form of Yoga in a few months now. For so many reasons. I stopped teaching when I became pregnant because the form of Yoga I taught was a mish mosh of Ashtanga, Iyengar and Vinyassa that was at times very challenging physically. This pregnancy has been the perfect opportunity for me to connect with the inner most forms of Yoga.. the inner most me. I feel like I'm in a funk but realized recently that I don't have a 'place' to practice since I moved 5 months ago.
I still have unpacked boxes in my room, which would normally be where I'd roll my mat out. And to those folks who are giften in the art of Yoga anytime, anywhere.. I am not that person. I NEED to have a 'spot' that's sacred that I can step into (and bring with me when I step out of it). It's a sort of conditioning thing for me. Anyone relate to that? Needing or desiring a sacred spot. I know that when I step into this physical place I can let everything dissipate. Fear, worry, etc.. For whatever reason, that's hard for me to do without a 'spot'.
So my New Years Resolution is to create some material space to help me create some spiritual space. Think it's important for this baby and for my heart. It's been awhile since I've gone on a breathing journey and I'm at the point where I miss those journey's so much. They were magical and revealing. I think however, I did need this time to reflect on my practice and *miss* it. Makes the return so much.. sweeter.
Any Resolutions of your own??

Re: Resolution: YOGA!
Sun, January 4, 2009 - 7:39 PMKatrina,
Check out this quote from the Berzin archives, on Buddhist practice:
"It is very important to meditate and study in an environment in which everything is neat, clean, and in order. This is also true for our place of work. What we see, even peripherally, greatly affects our states of mind. If everything around us is messy, our minds tend also to be messy. Moreover, it is helpful to have our places of study or meditation be aesthetically pleasing. Seeing a beautiful surrounding usually makes the mind happy, and a happy state of mind is receptive to doing something constructive"

Sun, January 4, 2009 - 9:05 PMThanks Sam, that was very validating. I find order to be beneficial to me on many many levels. Think I didn't realize in the past, just how important this is / was. -

Re: Resolution: YOGA!
Sun, January 11, 2009 - 9:59 AMAnother aspect of the sacred space is that it doesn't stay neat, clean, and aesthetically pleasing by itself. A big part of the yoga of the sacred space is maintaining it.

Re: Resolution: YOGA!
Wed, January 7, 2009 - 4:36 PMHi Katrina,
Yes, I understand about having a place to practice. It is part of the practice for me and It can be hard when I travel. I did my practice in an airport once. It is not the same. Yes, I need to have a spot that is sacred. Now in my life I have a strong daily practice with a perfect place and time. I have for many years. A change for the new year for me, is to switch from coffee to tea. It seems to be working out for now.
Be well and find your spot. -

Re: Resolution: YOGA!
Wed, January 7, 2009 - 9:03 PMEven with all the magical, hypnotic and spiritual methods, procrastination can still take root. In fact, working with clients all day, taking them deep into hypnotic trance, I tend to procrastinate doing my own work. Just cause it's so juicy in a weird way to hang onto those dysfunctions. So, my resolution is to start mapping out some new blue sky and re-target the moon again! Even though I've gotten everything that I've wanted, it's time to start working more for others. To be a better and more healing natured person for them. I can be such a hard-ass and use too much force to get things done at times.
Across whatever distance, I send my love,
:D

Re: Resolution: YOGA!
Sun, January 11, 2009 - 10:34 AMMichael,
YES. Procrastination is my worst enemy. This topic reminds me of my first born son who is exactly like me. We were eating Chinese a few nights ago and he opened his fortune. It read "Hard work pays off in the future, Laziness pays off today." lol.. He got a really big kick out of it.
The whole reason there are still boxes in my room is b/c of procrastination which led to de-motivation which almost led to a sort of depression. Had no clue what was even bothering me. You're resolutions are definitely worthy of lots of energy.

Sun, January 11, 2009 - 10:36 AMCurry,
How's the Tea working for you? My personal choice has always been Tea, only because the options are so much broader. If you saw my Tea cabinet you'd feel like you were at the Bombay Bazaar of exotic Teas. What's your favorite so far?

Re: Resolution: YOGA!
Mon, January 12, 2009 - 4:12 PMGenmai Cha my friend.. Genmai Cha!!! It's the best Green I've tasted and has the smallest amount of Caffeine. .008% in comparison to coffee's .05% If you need that extra caffeine I'd go with Sencha Green. It's a bit of a bolder flavor. And if you're really looking for a knock your taste buds out Green, go with Gunpowder Green. It's got a very distinc, bold flavor.
Also, Chicory has been used for a long time as a coffee substitue. I've never had it but from what I understand it's got a nice pleasant flavor with lots of health benefits.
I like anything with Licorice Root but you have to be careful with that b/c it can raise blood pressure. It's a very healthy herb that has a wonderful sweetness to anything it's added to but long term use isn't great. It's better to have a lot of it in one sitting then a little of it over a long period of time. So treat yourself every once in a while to something with Licorice Root in it.
Sometimes, to mix things up and cleanse a bit I'll mix Organic Raw, Apple Cider Vinegar with Ginger Juice with Lemon and Honey. That's a zesty goody too. Kinda have to play with the amounts to find out what suits you best. I tend to like lots of Lemon Juice in my concoction.
Stinging Nettle Leaf Tea is very very nourishing to your body and it has a nice light "earthy" flavor. If you got yourself some loose teas, you could create your own mixes. Like Nettles with Red Raspberry Leaf with some Genmai Cha. Now that would be interesting : ) I just might try that!
Merry Tea Time Curry!
Katrina
You should go to www.mountainroseherbs.com and peruse their Tea Inventory. Everything there is Organic and for the most part, they have VERY reasonable prices. So far, I've had nothing but good luck with them.

Re: Resolution: YOGA!
Mon, January 12, 2009 - 6:23 PMWow Katrina, I did ask the right person. You have given me quite a lot to experiment with. I have discovered that I do love licorice. I got some Egyptian Licorice tea, is that a treat. Now blood pressure is not something I ever worry about but I will take note of your caution. I am fond of ginger and lemon. I often drink straight lemon or lime juice in the morning. I am going to print out your reply and put it with my tea to remind me of you ideas. Thanks Katrina, Curry -

Re: Resolution: YOGA!
Mon, January 12, 2009 - 9:54 PMWell, I'm totally looking forward to becoming a part of your Tea Cabinet.. hehe
So, you lova the Licorice.. I really do to. In fact I was on a two week morning Licorice Tea stint when I started sprouting headaches every day. Unfortunately, it was the Licorice (completely confirmed b/c my sister who lives w me had the same effect) : (
As soon as I cut out the "Yogi's" Antioxidant Green Tea (which had the Licorice Root in it) my and my sister's headaches disappeared within 48 hrs. I've had two seperate periods of time where this happened. Now I drink it as a treat and use it more medicinally for bad sore throats and it doesn't bother me at all.
If you become a Tea Snob, you'll have to share some of your concoctions with me too!

how much apple cier vinegar do you think or use.. mixed in water? -

Re: Resolution: YOGA!
Tue, January 13, 2009 - 9:41 AMI usually use the big fat coffee cups for my Ginger Tea. I'm lucky to have a juicer that my Dad got me last Christmas, it's a great brand so I can easily juice hard roots like ginger and beets. I use fresh ginger juice, 1 tb max (prior to the juicer I just grated the amount I wanted) and about 1-3 tb of ACV depending on how big the cup is and how much of a kick I want that day. Then a healthy dollop of honey and about a half of a squeezed Lemon. -
-
Re: Resolution: YOGA!
Tue, January 13, 2009 - 9:46 AMOh.. the rest of the cup is hot but not boiling, water. I try not to kill the good properties of the juice by adding boiling water.

Re: Resolution: YOGA!
Tue, February 3, 2009 - 11:14 AMHi Cathy!
Things are going well for me.. In a bit of an emotional cleansing period which has been interesting & sometimes sad but I'm accepting how I really feel about things and going deeper than I have in a long time. I feel like I'm waking up again, which is exciting and... other things ; )
I'm glad you're on an upswing!!!!! Think we're all ready for warmer weather. (least those of us who are living in the colder climates are) I need a Gall Bladder Cleanse. Think I might have a stone or two and am hoping to not have to get it removed. I get the Gall Ultra Sound tomorrow to find out what's happening b/c I've had a couple serious attacks..one landed me in the hospital a couple weeks ago.. YIKES.. wasn't fun.
The skies the limit Cathy : ) Keep that upswing moving.

Re: Resolution: YOGA!
Tue, February 3, 2009 - 11:25 AMwow if you ended up in the hospital that'snot good.
I have had a bit of pain.
I am drinkign beet/celery/parsley/garlis juice.. lots.. a qt per day
and also taking flax seed
i foudn the info on internet and ran it by an ayurvedic practitioner.
We also talked about how anger not expressed or at oneself may be an issue in gall bladder pain.
I wish youwell.
Both my 80 yr old mother an dssis had theirs removed. My mother was ok after 2 weeks and had had to stay in hospital an extra day initially.
So whatever you decide .. tthe surgery can be simple, but if you can avoid it, well, beet juice! -
-
Re: Resolution: YOGA!
Tue, February 3, 2009 - 3:12 PMCathy,
You know.. you're the second person that's mentioned Anger being an issue for the Gall today... I'm listening now. Was listening before, but now I feel validated. I have a fair amount of anger that I've held onto for awhile which I'm in the process of examining and hopefully finding some outlet / closure for.
I was drinking beet juice daily in the beginning of the pregnancy for other things.. maybe I'll go back to it. I'd love to keep my Gall Bladder instead of having it removed. (especially if the issues are emotional manifesting in the physical) I'm reading Anatomy of the Spirit by Caroline Myss and am finding it to be one of the most cherished books I own. There is so much wisdom in the pages.
Oh... and I started attending Iyengar again. A new studio opened in my area and she's wonderful with pregnant women. Additionally, the classes are still so small because she's new which is great in terms of how much attention I receive!
Talk Soon

Re: Resolution: YOGA!
Tue, February 3, 2009 - 3:32 PMOh YAY, you liked it!! Good, it's really something wonderful and soooo soothing. Glad I can say I introduced you to it ; )
Lots of seemingly negative things I've experienced over the past few months, physically and emotionally are teaching me such profound lessons. I'm not happy to admit I'm one of those that needs to be prodded from time to time. But God and I both know I truly do want to learn... and since I decided to go stagnant for too long, God decided it was time for me to wake up : ) So here I am.. Katrina.... Present.. lol No more skipping school. -

Re: Resolution: YOGA!
Sat, January 10, 2009 - 6:50 PMSorry Katrina, my resolution this year is to leave from work on time...ho hum. I think the other part of your post, about needing or wanting a "sacred space" is more interesting. There are a couple of aspects to this that we haven't gotten into.
You mentioned that your pregnancy has been an opportunity to connect with the inner most forms of yoga. To me, a big part of yoga is the mental discipline. It's about staying focused and centered. In some ways, being able to stay focused and centered under adverse conditions is a highly valued skill, for example, an NFL quarterback or martial artist. It's nice to have that space that you can step into that gets you where you want ot go, but when times get tough, that's when staying calm really matters. -

Re: Resolution: YOGA!
Sun, January 11, 2009 - 10:30 AMHey Sam,
I'm a big believer in taking the opportunities Life gives us and utilizing them for growth. Sometimes, those 'opportunities' don't always seem as such though. Recognizing difficult situations as an opportunity has been difficult for me. I only realize it was an opportunity after the fact, not during it, where I could have made a difference or a personal perspective shift when I needed it!
I think you're on the mark with learning to be centered under adverse conditions. Our character is not determined by the good times, it's most certainly determined by the adverse ones. I need to stick that in my pipe and smoke it for awhile.

Sun, January 11, 2009 - 10:22 AMMy resolutions....
To continue the yoga that I am doing (and maybe more)
To sweat more(helps with my allergies)
To strengthen my body, especially the upper part(want to take another airial dance class!)
To be a more loving person to others and myself
To be more honest with myself in all things
I also moved, about ten months ago and still have unpacked boxes.

Re: Resolution: YOGA!
Sun, January 11, 2009 - 7:14 PMUgghhh, moving. I feel you on that one! I have this nice little program du-dad that redlines anything that isn't spelled correctly. You can ex that one off your Resolution list and hit the download button instead. I wish there was an "unpack boxes" download button I could hit!
I liked your being more honest with yourself Resolution. I think almost everyone can use a little more of that. Including myself.
Well.. Here's to a productive year filled with education, compassion and progression : )
