Well Jav, Ashtanga comes from an established lineage, and includes asana, pranayama, and vinyasa, all performed in a detailed and rigorous way. If you practiced it for a long time, you should know this better than I do. What system of yoga do you know that is more pure?

Weren't the Ashtanga series' created to keep the Maharaja's 12 year old boys busy? I practiced ashtanga for some time. Loved it then.....but definitely doesn't strike me as the purest form of yoga, not by a long shot....but that's just my opinion though. I may well be completely wrong.

"But I doubt that is really traditional astanga yoga (note the difference in spelling). Ashtanga is a german brand."

What a truly ridiculous thing to say. I apologize for my ignorance. As I learn more about it, I'm beginning to believe that Ashtanga Yoga is the purest form of yoga out there. The site that I referred to previously (http://www.ashtangayoga.info) is by a German Ashtanga practitioner, hence my mistaken belief. That site, by the way, contains a lot of really good info.

But, if you watch this 1938 video of B.K.S. Iyengar, you will also see a level of athleticism that is akin to or even surpasses modern gymnastics.

my novice level understanding is that astanga is like extreme yoga movements/poses while hatha is simpler and not nearly as extreme and contortioning?

I have looked at some astanga dvds and been astounded at the level of athletic skill/conditioning involved .
Seems like if you are a small slender person, it's easy to do but if you're like me and are big and heavy , watch out ...

From the Yoga-Tattva Upanishad:

24(b)-25. Now hear (the description of) Hatha-Yoga. This Yoga is said to possess (the following) eight subservients, Yama (forbearance), Niyama (religious observance), Asana (posture), Pranayama (suppression of breath), Pratyahara (subjugation of the senses), Dharana (concentration), Dhyana, the contemplation on Hari in the middle of the eyebrows and Samadhi that is the state of equality.

Modern usage, I suppose, is a little different.

As far as I've learned, Hatha Yoga refers classically to the entire tantric system of physical purification and cultivation including: asana practice, Pranayama, kriyas for cleansing the body (like the neti pot, enemas, etc.), tratak (staring practice), and energy meditation. In modern usage, Hatha has a similar meaning of yoga done with the physical body - i.e. asana practice.

Ashtanga, literally, means 8 limbs, and refers to the yoga system of patanjali, also sometimes called Raja Yoga. This system encompases: Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, and Samadhi - every aspect of cultivation from moral precepts and posture practice, to dissolving through meditation into enlightened awareness.
In modern usage "Ashtanga" refers most often to the system put forth by the master Patabhi Jois, which is a system of asanas linked in specific patterns. This style includes all the steps of Patanjali's practice, but is not the only thing you could call Ashtanga yoga.

hope that helps a bit

To begin:
Find a quiet spot with little likelihood of interruption. Get into a serious meditation pose such as svastikasana, placing your hands in thumb-to-forefinger mudra on your lap. close your eyes. Clear your mind.
Stay in this position until an idea comes to you as to what your next position will be. Picture it in your mind's eye exactly what motions will take place with you in getting into that position. Take your time.....
When you are ready, open your eyes and move easily into your first position. Hold this position exploring it and adjusting with very small motions to perfect it until it/you feel right about this first position.
While holding this position, consider what your next asana will be. Take your time. Do asana number two, holding and perfecting it until you feel you know what the next one to suggest itself will be.
.....and so on.

It can be an intuitive process as you tune to your own body and allow it to guide you.

Well for some reason when I tried to send this to you via personal message, Tribe errored out. So instead I'll post it here for everyone to use, should they so desire: http://www.yogajournal.com/poses/sequence_builder/?action=custom&yj=sequence_view&id=17153

There are notes to the side of each pose as to whether I chose to link them directly together or separate them with vinyasas. Any comments/suggestions are welcome. Enjoy!

Hello~

I just created my own practice that should last between 45-60 minutes. It's closer to astanga than hatha, but it's got a great flow and I'd be happy to send you the sequence, which you should have little trouble modifying to your own uses, if you like.

A bit late to this, but I've been practicing the mandiram vinyasa series with a teacher twice a week and at home on other days. It feels very complete (although, of course, I say this as somewhat of a newbie) and is very relaxing. If you wish, I have a copy of the sequence of poses that I can gladly scan an post. It's in catalan, but the illustrations are clear enough for it to be understandable. Blessings

If you've been practicing Yoga w/ an instructor for awhile then you should have a pretty good foundation.. considering you had a pretty good teacher however. I'd use the same sort of sun salutations to warm the body until you feel comfortable 'going with the flow' then structure your core Asanas meant for strength & balance in the middle of your workout, then your deep stretching / spinal twists towards the end.

Foundational things to remember are to
1. stay away from deep stretching in the beginning of your practice
2. stay away from deep spinal twisting in the beginning of your practice (things like triangle)
2. build your Asanas from the ground up, joint by joint - maintaining lift from each joint jump to the next
3. if you loose your breath, back off and slow down
4. keep your intention for practicing in the front of your mind, right beside your physical alignment

Other then that, you could have a loose plan for if you want more of a strengthening practice that day, balancing practice, stretching practice, pure mental intention (which yoga kinda becomes naturally after awhile) then build your asanas safely with whatever type of practice you've decided upon or simply 'feel' like : )

Start small and do your practice at the same time each day to build your habit. Trust your body to tell you what it needs and stretch and strengthen those parts. Breathe and explore how breath interacts with the asanas that have chosen you.

Sink into the stillness. Into the one point that you begin from each time you begin. And each time you end!

Across whatever distance, I send you my love, Namaste

Some thoughts. I keep a written daily practice. I like to work with a collection of short sequences of about ten minuets each. My current practice includes the following: A short stretching group with upward hands and uttanasana (forward bend), A standing balance group with eagle and tree and dancer, A standing asana group with triangle and warrior and several others. A surya namaskar of about ten sets, A group of inversions with head and shoulder stand with setu bandha and urdhva dhanurasana, A sequence of core asana including boat, a group of sitting asana with twists and forward bending, Closing with a sitting meditation or savasana.

Write a collection of sequences for yourself and then you can put them together depending on how you are feeling.
I like having a written practice that I can just follow and then change once in a while. Some people need to make it up every time.
You will have to find what you like.
