Do i hold it till after i start to get pins and needles in my legs and feet? this is good?

Thu, April 10, 2008 - 10:40 AMI've never heard of that Asana, but if by chance you mean Paschimotanasana I would hold it for as long as you feel the opening. I've stayed there for 10 minutes, possibly longer before. Inhaling, coming up, exhaling re-hinging back into the posture to improve the integrity of the pose.
If your legs are tingling and it's taking a long time for them to come back to life after you exit the Pose, yes, you're in it for too long. There's a couple reasons why your legs might be tingling.
2. While in the pose you're impinging a nerve/s, possibly needing to modify this Asana
3. You already have poor circulation and this pose exacerbates it
I don't really think pins and needles are good, it's a sign to me that blood's not circulating and you never want to deprive any part of the body of oxygen for long. My advice is to modify so you don't cut your circulation off.

i cant touch my toes so easily. without really forcing it, and i hear its good to relax into the pose, so ill just try holding longer and see whats up

you slowly ease into it while continuing to breath. As you continue to do so, things will warm up and stretch out. Intermittently, stretch further forward as you warm and stretch so to speak. You do not need to somehow suddenly be in the pose as depicted in the picture. You may even need to work on it for quite a long time, depending on your physiology. You do not need to emulate the picture, or the emaciated yogababe next you in class. You may even have different abilities on different days
Do the best you can; don't beat yourself up over nothing.

Asanas are like gemstones that you string together in varied combinations to affect the body and being in an intended way.
Or like a deliberate mixture of herbs to bring about a result. If you are after the results of a good foreword fold, maybe don't hold so long in Paschimotanasana alone but try a string of Asanas that are complimentary. Most importantly with regularity. What I have said here is off coarse elementary and I'm sure you have thought of this already. The body is elastic and will yeild over time.
