hey all..
so this is my very first post on (any) tribe!
i am working on opening/strengthening? my heart and throat chakras. they have been what i feel as closed up or mostly inactive for as long as i can remember. i know some postures that are good, such as camel, bridge.. i am wondering if anyone has any other postures or any insight into this that might help me to consider.. thanks in advance, namaste*

Re: heart and throat chakras
Thu, September 3, 2009 - 11:52 PMlong, deep breathing in cobra. . .
shoulderstand, followed by fish. . .
but probably the best thing I can come up with is - do some chanting from the heart every day. doesn't have to be loud, but really feel it vibrating in the heart chakra. any mantra will do. or simply the "AAAAAAAH" sound
hope this helps

Re: heart and throat chakras
Fri, September 4, 2009 - 9:08 AMYes! if you can incorporate some sound while you're in the poses and also setting an intention for yourself. For instance, if you want to create more space and openness in your heart and throat chakra, while you go into a backbend (or other chest opener), say that intention to yourself or out loud. The power of words and as you feel it through your body will really support you in this.
Best,

Re: heart and throat chakras
Fri, September 4, 2009 - 9:22 AMJalandhara-bandha and any of the many postures that include jalandhara are good for opening the throat cakra. Any posture with a strong stretch of the chest or upper back helps loosen the heart knots.
Hope that helps. If you want a list of postures, I'm happy to type them up, but they are pretty much the ones you would expect based on the above criteria.
Warm Regards,
Ryan

How would you experience this 'closed up' feeling?

Re: heart and throat chakras
Mon, September 21, 2009 - 4:43 PMi typically feel tightness, and while i can feel the energy flow up to my third chakras, and energy in my upper two, the throat and heart both feel like stagnant, like a room you'd want to open the window in.. if that kind of explains?
also, it seems as though around my third chakra, there is a very specific block, which is sometimes tighter than others, sometimes almost a boiling bubbling type feeling.. i have made progress with this through just general practice, but would love to know more about what specifically this is about.. i'm assuming it has to do with third chakra issues..
i know i just need to get energy flowing through, but it has been more difficult than i feel it should be, like i will be in a posture and breathing my intention, but it's like i'm trying to act into release and i need to just release. just keep at it i know. sometimes when i try to almost force a release or force energy past the block near my third chakra, i feel like i'm going to pass out.
thank you all so much for your help. -

Re: heart and throat chakras
Tue, September 22, 2009 - 1:35 AMSometimes when we get to a certain place in our practice or our lives, we become aware of something that we previously weren’t. Though it might not seem like much to you now, it’s a big step just to be able to characterize the phenomena as you have. You’ve received some great advice on poses and breathing from others here, and I think if you employ them, the recommendations will be helpful, though after reading the description of what you’ve written several times, I tend to think we’re dealing with an emotional issue – aren’t they all?
You might want to ask yourself: Other than yoga, what it is you can do in your life that might open the window you speak of? Can you pinpoint events in your life that caused the window to slam shut? Or have you maybe realized that something is missing that you weren’t previously aware? Or have a series of events transpired that have cause the bubbling-boiling feeling that you simply just can’t seem to quell? I’m not asking you to answer these questions in an open forum; you’ve already been exceptionally honest and open – just that you ask yourself these questions. Sometimes is takes time for the type of blockage you speak of to begin to dissipate, for memories to fade and new types of integration begin to replace them. This is not something you can force, even though your intellect may tell you otherwise. It’s more than enough right now that you’re aware of the feelings and sensations. In time the blockage will dissipate and pass, being replaced by a new strength. Rilke said something about our dragons ultimately transforming into princesses.
And keep up with your yoga.
