you know, that makes a lot of sense to me [initially]. my body carries most stress and tightness in my upper body and shoulders. i'll increase my stretches here and see how it results.
thanks for the help!!

btw, Ezek...the full abdominal rotation and waiting to lift my arm by leaving my hand at the hip is helping my alignment, though i did feel a little bit of pins last week in class. thanks too!

it's possible that if you have tight anterior shoulder muscles (pectoralis minor most likely) that they are being pulled taut over the thoracic outlet which feeds the arm when you stretch up in these poses. Limited blood and nerve flow combined with the effect of gravity will give you the pins and needles.

One way you can start to work is to do stretches that open the front of the chest, especially where it connects to/becomes the shoulder. Pressing the palm against the wall with the arm straight and then turning away from it at the shoulder is one i like, or holding onto a strap or belt with both hands, then stretching up over the head and behind you.
If that doesn't work, the same plexus could be getting impeded by some of the neck muscles.

good luck!

a possibility: if the shoulder is out of alignment, which is very common for the upper shoulder in both these asanas, you could be impeding circulation, resulting in finger tingling.
modification: instead of extending the arm right away, place the hand on the hip. bring the shoulder way back (shoulderblade on the back) and twist the chest and navel toward the ceiling, using core strength. Then, keeping the core engaged and the shoulderblade on the back, slowly extend the arm. This takes practice to develop the coordination and strength to do all this at the same time. The common error is to extend the upper arm and use it to pull the rest of the body into the form. . . better to keep the hand on the hip as you practice. Use a block on floor for bottom hand if it helps.
Good Luck and Godspeed

Hi!

So, this has happened a few times in 2 specific asanas, and I am wondering if anyone has had, or has had a student experience this also.

In Utthita parsvakonasana [extended side angle pose] and Utthita Trikonasana [ extended triangle pose], 2-3 cycles of breath in, my raised hand and fingers start to tingle like they will fall asleep.

Why is this? and is there a modification or prep. exercise to alliveate this from happening?

thanks!
