    <summary type="html">The use of mantra stems from the belief that certain sounds used in the Sanskrit language have some spiritual significance or power.  I've found one or two that seem to be effective, but I'm not sure that the power is inherent in the sound itself.  Patanjali's Yoga Sutras give only one mantra, which is OM, the symbol of Isvara (the Lord).  His instructions include recitation and contemplation of its meaning.  The previous quote mentions certain intonations that were used, which I know nothing about.&#xD;

The ancient Aryans of India apparently adopted the use of mantra wholeheartedly,  but mostly in the form of prayers to various gods.  There are other mantras in which each syllable symbolizes something.  Some consist of only one or two syllables.  Others have many syllables that may be combined in different ways and with different intonations.</summary>
