Lynn,
At your request, here's what I know about mantra, although I'm no expert.
" One should practise the Mantra along with its Matrikas (proper intonations of the sounds) and others for a period of twelve years;
22. Then he gradually obtains wisdom along with the Siddhis, (such as) Anima, etc. Persons of weak intellect who are the least qualified for Yoga practise this." Yoga Tattva Upanishad, 1.21
Let's see if that's enough to get the discussion rolling.

I do have some qualifications to speak about mantra being that over the past 13 years I have doing mantra mediation for over 2 hours daily.

Re: Mantra
Thu, May 14, 2009 - 5:52 PMI'm not speaking with any authority, just from my own observations. The ancient Aryans of India apparently adopted the use of mantra wholeheartedly, but mostly in the form of prayers to various gods. There are other mantras in which each syllable symbolizes something. Some consist of only one or two syllables. Others have many syllables that may be combined in different ways and with different intonations. -

This one of key differences of western philosophy and Vedic philosophy is that the Vedic culture words do not symbolize something rather they are in fact that thing in its seed form, bij. -

Re: Mantra
Sun, May 17, 2009 - 6:33 AM"Whoever strives for esoteric development must above all be clear that
certain extremely simple formulae conceal a force which takes effect if
these formulae or sentences are made alive in the soul. He does not
rightly grasp what this implies if he tries to understand such sentences
merely with the intellect. That way they say very little to him, to begin
with. He must for a certain time fill his whole inner being with such a
sentence, pouring himself into it with all the powers of his soul. Such a
sentence is: `I am'.
The whole secret of present-day human existence really lies in this
sentence."

I found this on another forum. I'm not familiar with Rudolf Steiner or his philosophy, but the quote seems relevant.

Mon, May 18, 2009 - 9:27 PMIf the Mantra is chanted with intense and complete devotion and emersion with the divine, even one can be enough.
