Hello I am new to this tribe. This question is for those yogis who have experienced intense study in seclusion (ashram or other) for more than a year. Did you have a difficult time returning to the outside world? What was returning like for you? What helped? Is your practice better or worse since your return? Thank you.

Re: What is it like to return to the outside world after intense yoga study?
Fri, March 21, 2008 - 7:46 PMIt can be difficult since during your intense yoga training you probably reached a higher level of spirituality and sensitivity. Since most people are not spiritually inclined, it might be kind of a shock to re-enter the world. But keep your spiritual practices and you might be able to reserve love and compassion for others even though you may not see eye to eye. This is all gathered from my personal experince since I've gone through this rather recently. But, you might find re-entry to be an easier experience. Just stay connected to the Divine.

Re: What is it like to return to the outside world after intense yoga study?
Tue, March 25, 2008 - 8:37 AMI think that the tools of being in body and awareness of body are very helpful! In terms of re-entry, this will give clues on boundaries and staying present with external experience. A connection of friends, family, and community are also very helpful for re-entry. They may not necessarily understand - but I think his web is part of how we function as humans. Some structure - a job, a yoga practice studio. Healthy food! Sharing healthy food with others!!!! Find new activities and healing allies.
One aspect for me - has been deciphering the magical and the mundane.
Healing allies can come in many forms. Mushrooms - like reishi or cooking with shiitakes are very grounding.

Re: What is it like to return to the outside world after intense yoga study?
Tue, March 25, 2008 - 1:41 PMI found "returning" extremely unsettling... I was so sensitive to the chaos of ugly sensorial bombardment of the "mainstream" that I could barely cope with restaurants and yikes - grocery shopping...
What helped me was to maintain my meditation/yoga practice and "return" in baby steps... don't just jump into old routines! I also felt that I needed to keep much of my intense sadhana experience to myself for awhile, telling only a few stories to a few people, and some I will never share... Nature, warm baths, being in the sacred space of my home, love from my daughter and continued connection with those who were with me during my studies were also all helpful...
I agree, definitely don't proselytize : ) analyze, realize, integrate...
peace,
e

Probably the worst thing one can do, spoken from experience

Yes, that describes it exactly. -

Re: What is it like to return to the outside world after intense yoga study?
Tue, March 25, 2008 - 6:20 PMhmm. not sure i can explain...
i have a pensient for imagination - and sometimes i am imagining i am doing my practice instead of really doing it daily and with dedication.
magical - because in bliss things happen that are miraculous - and sometimes just to think something seems to make it happen.
mundane - because after the aha - there is much work to be done - and much earth plane to be held to keep getting work done. -

I struggle with the same thing. To me the bliss seems real and the mundane does not, but I tend toward magical thinking anyway.

Re: What is it like to return to the outside world after intense yoga study?
Wed, March 26, 2008 - 6:45 AMWow, this is a GR-eat thread. I thought I was the only one who had troubles!
Proselytizing - this is hard not to do for me, I'm a teacher by nature - I love to share. I know very well that everyone is on their own path and to wait until they come... and I certainly know by experience that proselytizing is NOT a good idea, but it's still hard :)
Zip - one of my teachers recently told me to "Demystify and dedisfunctionalize" concepts that seemed foreign to me. One of my mottos is that nothing is ever as mysterious as it appears - find a way to ground the magic and to raise the mundane. Bring them together rather than separate. :)
Thanks all for this thread.
Namaste,

I've struggled with this a bit myself ~ mostly with food. Some of the people I care about eat the most horrendous diets. I tend to speak up if I am to be involved in the preparing or eating a meal. Mostly I struggle with wanting to share my experiences with others. And for the most part that's just not possible.
"find a way to ground the magic and to raise the mundane"
Nicely said. I will give this some thought.
