Hand Stands

I have a block with this pose.

I can get up into it from crow, but I can't stay. I can use the wall fine, and hang out for a while, but I think my shoulders are too floppy, so my arms aren't resting down, they are still pushing. My head also isn't really letting go, which I think is part of the problem. does anyone have advice for this pose? I made a good step by keeping my shoulders above my wrists if I kick up, that prevents a full fly over. I also finally got flipping all the way over... so I'm not as afraid (can't quite land in a perfect wheel, but getting closer : )

I want to be able to go up and just stand still pretty much indefinitely. Help please!

    Hey Daniel!

I HEAR YOU!! I had a hard time with the balancing, strength and gracefulness of this Asana for awhile. Still do in fact. One small thing helped a ton before anything physical came to pass.

Envision yourself doing it first. Eyes closed, take your time and visualize it happening.
Engaging my lats while using my entire shoulder girdle while relaxing my finger tips also helped. Spread the fingers as wide as you can and roll the weight on the hand first from the base, by the wrist then as you're elevating upwards rolling to the balls of the hands with a relaxed grip on the floor.

One thing I noticed I was doing was going "flat handed", similar to going flat footed. Kepping a nice arch in the hand was also very very helpful for me.

KUDOS to you for being brave and allowing yourself to go over. That can be so so scary. Especially if you go flat onto your back and knock the wind out of yourself : ) That's never fun eh?!

I used a wall for a long time and still need one depending on the day. I wasn't ready to go over yet as I wasn't getting as fully as I should have into wheel so I was a bit apprehensive to flop. Do you totally find that some days you're very balanced while others you're scattered? I find it's completely due to my mental state.

What really helped me was feeling my chest move forward and shoulderblades move down the back, as in cobra. the heart sort of locks in place, connecting with the floor, and you find a new balance. hope it helps

i'm really into being more honest lately, so I'm going to try speaking this in a way that matters.

Not long ago I was going deeper into leg lifts in wheel. I got very deep and clear, and I heard 'I can't hold him anymore' and then I basically fell.

There is something about being held, spiritually, as we enter these deep poses, that is very real. being witnessed in a way that enables us to keep the deeper energies balanced,

I have been doing much better in handstands this morning. I've been trying for eyars to break into this pahse, and its working. I was holding the advice KAtrina offered, THANK YOU!

I'm gettin more comfortable with the flip oers, and ine out of ten times I don't loose my breathe. it'll be great to be so balanced I can simply bend into wheel with grace,...

And I was learning to open the shoulders, keep the chest forard, and feel the heart lock through the arms into the ground... only to come online and see your post ezekiel.

really special. Thank you both. there is such sacredness in expressing exactly my edge, being open about it. I'm going deeper!

finding this rootedness as my arms become more like legs, and I feel their extension reaching into my heart, to not lock up in the shoulders. It is lifting my whole spirit!

        Awesome power to the heart!
Another thing that I just recalled - an instruction I got in class once, that really transformed my handstand on the spot. . .
Inhale, draw energy from the floor up into the heart, and exhale, push out from the heart through the hands. . .
good to hear about your progress.
