Today in Yoga class I was doing the triangle and then the half moon. We were doing this against the wall, and even though I practice the triangle at home, but not the half moon---at class it was causing more stress. I'm sure I was pushing the position more than I will at home. Anyway---as I did the half moon, to the left with my right leg in the air.....I twisted weird, a loud pop occurred, my leg gave away and I had excruciating pain in my hip. Now my hip is sore and the muscles surrounding are tight & in a spasm....Does anyone have any idea what I did? And what should I do to make it better. Rest or work through the pain?

Wed, April 16, 2008 - 2:20 PMI don't know what you did but it sounds kind of serious.
Do NOT "work through" it. Seek diagnosis from some type of Health Professional
IMO.

Re: My hip went pop!
Thu, April 17, 2008 - 8:17 AMDefinitely DO NOT work through the pain. You might have torn something, in which case "working through it" will actually damage it more. Rest, and see a doctor if the pain doesn't go away in a couple of days.
I know there's a lot of debate over whether you should ice something or apply heat, but several friends of mine who are body workers give this advice: ice for 10 minutes every hour for the first two days after the injury, then switch to heat for 10 minutes every hour after the first two days.

Re: My hip went pop!
Thu, April 17, 2008 - 9:02 AMAnd maybe don't practice it against the wall anymore, you're probably not using the muscles you need to hold you safely in that pose when you're against the wall.
I totally agree with everything else people have said here.
How are ya Aqua!!? -

Re: My hip went pop!
Thu, April 17, 2008 - 1:55 PMFrom everything I could find through Google it's probably a labral or labrum tear. Which can be serious or no big deal it all depends on the severity and how quickly it's heals. I'm feeling more optimistic than I was last night. I was not happy, limping along, today it's sore and I'm still limping a bit, but it's feeling better. THAT a good sign. Plus I saw my massage therapist today and that helped.
BUT because I'd been moving right along. I got over confident and decided I was Sean Corn.........Haaa~! Not really, but damn that would he nice eh?Thank you all for the advice--I'm taking it easy and listening to the Universe saying MODERATION---listen to your body you silly woman. *grin* -

Aqua,
Hip "popping" can be caused by multiple things. Yes, some serious, some no big deal. Labrum tear (cartilage) seems possible but unlikely.
The head of the femur in the acetabulum (hip joint) can "pop" out and in by very small movements. In a forced position, this can cause
trauma to muscle, tenon, and/or cartilage. The pain you are feeling comes from the resultant inflammation in the area impinging on
nerves, etc.
For the time being, do try to avoid movements that cause pain, but I know that walking in pain is unavoidable.
Once the inflammation is down and the pain is substantially less, here are some things that you can try:
- Supta padagusthasana with leg out to the side: start laying on your back on the floor with legs together, toes and knees pointing straight up. Try to maintain a natural curve in your low back by turning your upper inner thigh in (down toward the floor). This should also help to bring the back of the legs flat to the floor. Then slowly and hopefully with no pain, lift the leg straight up on the side with the injury. Hold the back of the leg with both hands (having someone help support the leg too can be good) and press the femur into your hands. Experiment with externally rotating (outer hip away from shoulder) the lifted leg and verify that there is still no pain. Then keeping support of the back of the leg with one hand (someone else can help too), let the leg go out to the side, keeping the opposite hip down. Again only if no pain. And again experiment with externally rotating the leg, and tucking the tail bone on that side.
The above is a movement similar to ardha candrasana (half moon pose), but is not weight bearing. To add some feeling of weight bearing, have someone push on your heal in both positions above. The pressure should be straight down the length of the leg.
I hope that helps.
Blessings,
Scott -

Re: My hip went pop!
Fri, April 18, 2008 - 10:52 AMThank you for the informations, which sounds like excellent advice.....I'll definitely give it a try. As I don't want to be forced [by way of circumstance] to have to stop doing yoga, it benefits me in so many ways. Not just physically, but mentally as well as spiritually....*S*

Re: My hip went pop!
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 12:52 AMI am not tall and willowy with 12 years of dance and gymnastics. I played football and wrestled in HS before I began Yoga. I am built like an Irish brick layer. Dense and thick. I've worked hard for every inch of my flexibility. My hip began popping about two years into my Asana practice, hurt a bit but was mostly ridiculously loud. One started then the other. My teacher told me I was just finding more space in my hips. turned out to be accurate. Things in the body can be scarry but just observe like a scientist.
Yoga changes the body! Wait till the party really gets going; you start waking up the deeper layers of connective tissue and when the internal organs start to shift. A doctor will tell you to quit. You either have faith in what you are doing or you don't. That is what I love about yoga the most, It pushes you to greater and greater states of faith in yourself. -
