Was wondering if any here had gone all raw or near all raw?
I've been really wanting to make the transition but the time required is a commitment. One that I'm not unwilling to make, but one that I need some suggestions on. How have you found time to prepare the foods you need for an all raw diet? Also, I run & teach yoga regularly so I need foods that can keep up with the activity I'm putting out.
This has been something which is so important to me, but only recently am I really feeling the pull to take the step towards being raw. I have three boys and a man that is a hardcore meat eater in my home. I can't see the whole household changing. Think that might be too much at this stage for me to prepare as well. Think we'll make subtle strides in that direction as time passes, but I'm ready now.
Any helpful insight and time savers?
Thank you!
Katrina

Re: Anyone ALL-RAW?
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 7:53 AMHi Katrina,
I am a long way from all raw. Still I see value in raw foods so I try to, in small ways, increase my raw food. For me it is still a little here and a little there. More is better. It starts with what I purchase and a little planing.
Good luck in your quest.

Re: Anyone ALL-RAW?
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 8:18 AMIn my usual diet I eat about 50% raw, if not more. I've done a couple weeks of all raw before and enjoyed it. I'm a very active person, and I teach as well, and I didn't have any problems keeping my energy up -- though you will find that you eat a LOT more food, at least in the beginning. There's a new book out by Alissa Cohen called Living on Live Food that you might find helpful -- she lays out a plan, complete with shopping lists and recipes, for 30 days of raw eating. There isn't a ton of food prep involved, but you will need a food processor. -

Re: Anyone ALL-RAW?
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 8:51 AMI'm about 50% raw too. I always try to eat more raw and would like to do a week or 2 of all raw. I'm going to be taking a holistic nurtrition class in my holistic health program. I know I'll have lots more info about it and will share.
I know if I had a food processor I would do it more. ;-) -

Re: Anyone ALL-RAW?
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 10:27 AMFrom what I understand, eating too much raw food aggravates vata, and as such is usually an ayurvedically-unwise diet. -

Re: Anyone ALL-RAW?
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 11:00 AMI've heard the same thing as Kevin, as well as actually trying to do or eat anything in the public sphere with an All Rawist proves to be really difficult given their dietary restrictions and the lack of any substantial raw food choices "outside."
Therefore, dating a 100% Rawist appears to be off the to-do list.

Re: Anyone ALL-RAW?
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 11:42 AMI also heard the same as Kevin and experienced also. But you can add curd or its derivatives in mixing raw vegetables. One can also cook half the way so it would be raw as well as cooked. There are many books available for raw food in India. There must be websites also. I will check and if i find I 'll put it on tribe.

Re: Anyone ALL-RAW?
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 11:36 AMI tried raw in the beginning and wondered why my stomach ached. Then I discovered macrobiotics and Ayurveda. Raw is fine for Pitta's and perhaps Kaphas, but not good for Vatas which I am.....I'm extremely happy I found this out because eating RAW foods was making me worse, and being health conscious nutritionally I could't figure out why---until I discovered the REST of the Story. Haaa!
I'm not sure what your dosha is, but if you're vata at all---and just from the little I know you, I'd say you are some. If not Vata/Pitta Pitta/Vata. If you're Pitta/Vata I think you could get away with 50% raw or maybe even more, but not 100% and if your Vata/Pitta I'd say going raw would not be a wise move at all.

Re: Anyone ALL-RAW?
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 12:26 PMIt's actually good news hearing that ALL RAW isn't necessarily the best way to eat. I'd still like to cook some food and while I aspired to be all raw, I doubt that will ever actually happen. I'd like more-so to be about 60% raw and 40% cooked. I'd still like to enjoy bread every once in awhile amongst some other cooked foods. -

Re: Anyone ALL-RAW?
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 1:10 PMBefore we found Fire, we had a very long history of only eating raw food.
I can not really believe that it would be bad for you.
Have we changed that much. I think not.
I know that it is difficult to do in today's world. -

Mon, April 28, 2008 - 3:25 PMCurry,
This certainly is an interesting (and hot) debate between raw foodists and cooked foodies. I really wish there were more long term studies done on this topic.

Re: Anyone ALL-RAW?
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 3:38 PMI think the only neo-zealots of any given "movement" are those that have chosen to find different answers, differents ways of doing things.
Generally speaking, I think it's great to be courageous enough to try things in new ways.
HOWEVER
What often happens with said zealots, is that they begin to believe that their way, or the new way is the better way and the only way, and often REALLY REALLY need to tell others about it! That is the nature of zealotry. It also appears to involve dumbing down or otherwise not looking at the bigger picture in a critical capacity, eventually arriving at some point in time where their beliefs appear to trump even common sense, so strong are their beliefs that they have found the righteous path sutiable for EVERYONE.
This path or mode of being was told in an obscure, secret tale called The Sacred Crooked Path of the Retarded Buddha on his Way to HappyLand: A Tale of Goofy Misperceptions and being in the Human Space-Time Continuum.
Old-Fashioned Zealot; New Agey Zealot...in the end, it's all kind of the same thing/behavior.
